Understanding Jewelry Materials: What to Expect From Your Pieces at Zahi Paris

Understanding Our Jewelry Materials

At Zahi Paris, transparency and elegance go hand in hand.
We believe that understanding the materials used in your jewelry is essential to making informed purchases and properly caring for your pieces.

Our collections include both semi-fine jewelry and selected fine jewelry pieces. Each material offers a different balance of beauty, durability, maintenance, and price point — and we want our customers to know exactly what they are purchasing.

This guide explains the differences between our materials, their expected durability, and the proper care required to preserve their beauty over time.

Semi-Fine Jewelry

Most products sold at Zahi Paris are considered semi-fine jewelry. These pieces are designed to offer luxurious aesthetics at a more accessible price point while combining durability, style, and modern craftsmanship.

Our semi-fine jewelry may include the following materials, finishes, and decorative elements:

Base Materials

  • Stainless Steel

  • Brass

  • Copper

  • Zinc Alloy / Metal Alloy

  • Titanium

  • Aluminum

Platings & Finishes

  • Gold Plating

  • 14K Gold Plating

  • 18K Gold Plating

  • Silver Plating

  • Platinum Plating

  • Rose Gold Plating

  • PVD Coating (Physical Vapor Deposition)

  • High Polish Finish

Stones & Decorative Elements

  • Zirconia / Cubic Zirconia (CZ)

  • Moissanite

  • Crystal

  • Rhinestones

  • Tiger Eye

  • Freshwater Pearl

  • Mother of Pearl

  • Synthetic Pearl

Additional Materials

  • Resin

  • Enamel

  • Ceramic

  • Acrylic

  • Leather

  • Fabric / Silk Cord

These materials provide a refined and elegant appearance while remaining more accessible than solid precious metal fine jewelry.

Please note that semi-fine jewelry is not considered solid gold, solid platinum, or fully precious fine jewelry unless explicitly stated in the product description. Due to the nature of plated and fashion-oriented materials, gradual wear, fading, oxidation, or tarnishing may naturally occur over time depending on usage habits, moisture exposure, skin chemistry, friction, environmental conditions, and maintenance practices.

This natural aging process is considered normal wear and not a manufacturing defect.

Fine Jewelry

Products specifically labeled as Fine Jewelry are crafted using higher-value materials and superior craftsmanship. These pieces are designed to offer enhanced longevity, durability, and resistance compared to standard semi-fine jewelry.

Our fine jewelry collections may include:

  • Sterling Silver 925

  • Premium Moissanite

  • Higher-quality gemstone settings

  • Precious metal finishes

  • 18K Gold-Plated

  • Synthetic Pearl

Fine jewelry pieces generally maintain their appearance longer when properly cared for, though all jewelry naturally requires maintenance and careful handling over time.

Material Guide

Understanding the materials used in your jewelry helps ensure proper care, realistic expectations, and long-lasting enjoyment of your pieces. Each material offers different characteristics in terms of appearance, durability, maintenance, and wear resistance.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is one of the most durable materials used in semi-fine jewelry.

Characteristics

  • Resistant to rust and corrosion

  • Suitable for everyday wear

  • More durable than many traditional fashion jewelry metals

  • Less prone to tarnishing

Expectations

Although stainless steel is highly durable, plated stainless steel jewelry may still fade or wear over time depending on:

  • moisture exposure,

  • perspiration,

  • friction,

  • skin chemistry,

  • and environmental conditions.

Brass

Brass is a commonly used base metal in jewelry production due to its durability and ability to hold plating effectively.

Characteristics

  • Durable and versatile

  • Frequently used beneath gold plating

  • Warm-toned appearance

Expectations

Brass may naturally oxidize or darken over time if exposed to moisture or air.

Copper

Copper is often used as a base material beneath plated jewelry finishes.

Characteristics

  • Malleable and durable

  • Commonly used in plated jewelry manufacturing

Expectations

Copper naturally oxidizes over time and may react with skin acidity or moisture exposure.

Zinc Alloy / Metal Alloy

Metal alloys are commonly used in semi-fine jewelry due to their affordability and design flexibility.

Characteristics

  • Lightweight

  • Suitable for detailed designs

  • Widely used in fashion and semi-fine jewelry

Expectations

Alloy-based jewelry may tarnish or fade more quickly than stainless steel, especially with frequent exposure to moisture and friction.

Titanium

Titanium is a lightweight and highly durable metal appreciated for its resistance and comfort.

Characteristics

  • Lightweight

  • Strong and corrosion-resistant

  • Hypoallergenic for many individuals

Expectations

Titanium offers excellent durability but still benefits from proper care and storage.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a lightweight metal occasionally used in modern jewelry designs.

Characteristics

  • Lightweight

  • Comfortable for everyday wear

  • Contemporary appearance

Expectations

Aluminum may scratch more easily than harder metals and should be handled with care.

Platings & Finishes

Plated jewelry consists of a thin layer of precious metal applied over a base material. While elegant and luxurious in appearance, plating naturally wears over time depending on usage and care.

Gold Plating

A thin layer of gold applied over a base metal.

Expectations

Gold plating may gradually fade with:

  • water exposure,

  • perspiration,

  • cosmetics,

  • friction,

  • and daily wear.

14K Gold Plating

14K gold plating offers a softer, balanced gold tone.

Expectations

Like all plated jewelry, gradual fading over time is natural and expected.

18K Gold Plating

18K gold plating provides a richer and warmer gold appearance.

Expectations

Although luxurious in appearance, the plating layer remains delicate and requires proper care to preserve longevity.

Silver Plating

Silver plating offers the look of silver at a more accessible price point.

Expectations

Silver-plated jewelry may naturally tarnish or darken over time due to environmental exposure.

Platinum Plating

Platinum plating provides a bright, refined silver-toned finish.

Expectations

Platinum plating may gradually wear with friction and repeated use.

Rose Gold Plating

Rose gold plating creates a soft pink-golden finish.

Expectations

The finish may naturally fade over time depending on care habits and exposure conditions.

PVD Coating (Physical Vapor Deposition)

PVD coating is a modern finishing process commonly used to improve durability and wear resistance.

Characteristics

  • More resistant than standard plating

  • Better adhesion to the metal surface

  • Enhanced durability for everyday wear

Expectations

Although more durable, PVD-coated jewelry is still not indestructible and may eventually show signs of wear.

High Polish Finish

A highly reflective finish designed to create a mirror-like shine.

Expectations

Highly polished surfaces may develop small scratches over time with regular use.

Stones & Decorative Elements

Decorative stones and embellishments contribute to the beauty and individuality of each jewelry piece.

Zirconia / Cubic Zirconia (CZ)

A popular diamond simulant known for its brilliance.

Characteristics

  • Sparkling appearance

  • Affordable luxury aesthetic

  • Commonly used in semi-fine jewelry

Expectations

Zirconia may lose brilliance over time if not cleaned properly.

Moissanite

A premium gemstone alternative recognized for exceptional sparkle and durability.

Characteristics

  • High brilliance

  • Durable and resistant

  • Suitable for fine jewelry

Expectations

Moissanite offers excellent longevity when properly cared for.

Crystal

Decorative cut crystal elements used for sparkle and visual detail.

Expectations

Crystals may scratch or loosen over time with impact or improper handling.

Rhinestones

Decorative stones commonly used in fashion-oriented jewelry designs.

Expectations

Rhinestones may lose shine or loosen over time with repeated wear.

Tiger Eye

A natural gemstone recognized for its golden-brown reflective appearance.

Expectations

Natural variations in color and pattern are normal and contribute to the uniqueness of each piece.

Freshwater Pearl

Organic pearls valued for their elegance and natural beauty.

Expectations

Pearls are delicate and sensitive to:

  • perfumes,

  • cosmetics,

  • sweat,

  • and chemicals.

Proper care is essential to preserve their surface quality.

Mother of Pearl

An iridescent natural shell material used for decorative detailing.

Expectations

Mother of Pearl may scratch or lose luster if exposed to harsh chemicals or friction.

Synthetic Pearl

Synthetic pearls offer the elegant appearance of natural pearls with increased consistency and affordability.

Expectations

Synthetic pearls should still be protected from excessive moisture, chemicals, and friction to preserve their finish.

Additional Materials

Resin

A lightweight decorative material often used in artistic jewelry designs.

Expectations

Resin may scratch or discolor if exposed to excessive heat or chemicals.

Enamel

A colored coating used for decorative finishes.

Expectations

Enamel surfaces may chip or crack if impacted or dropped.

Ceramic

A modern jewelry material known for its smooth finish and lightweight feel.

Expectations

Ceramic is resistant to fading but may crack if subjected to strong impact.

Acrylic

A lightweight decorative material used in contemporary jewelry designs.

Expectations

Acrylic may scratch more easily than metal surfaces.

Leather

Leather elements are commonly used in bracelets and mixed-material jewelry.

Expectations

Leather naturally ages over time and should be kept away from excessive moisture.

Fabric / Silk Cord

Soft textile materials used in necklaces and bracelets.

Expectations

Fabric and silk cords may naturally wear or fray with prolonged use.

Understanding Plated Jewelry

Many semi-fine jewelry pieces use plating techniques to achieve luxurious finishes while remaining affordable.

These may include:

  • Gold Plating

  • 14K Gold Plating

  • 18K Gold Plating

  • Silver Plating

  • Platinum Plating

  • Rose Gold Plating

  • Synthetic Pearl

Plating refers to a thin layer of precious metal applied over a base material. While beautiful and elegant, plated finishes are not permanent and may gradually wear with time and use.

The longevity of plated jewelry depends on several factors, including:

  • frequency of wear,

  • exposure to moisture,

  • perspiration,

  • cosmetics,

  • perfumes,

  • skin chemistry,

  • friction,

  • and storage conditions.

Some individuals may experience faster oxidation or fading due to natural skin acidity or environmental exposure.

Jewelry Care Instructions

To preserve the beauty and longevity of your jewelry, we strongly recommend following these care instructions:

Maintain its radiant shine by gently wiping with a soft cloth after each wear.
Remove before physical activity or exposure to moisture, as perspiration may react with the metal over time, potentially causing tarnishing or corrosion.

Additionally:

  • Avoid direct contact with water, perfumes, lotions, oils, and chemicals.

  • Remove jewelry before showering, swimming, exercising, or sleeping.

  • Store jewelry individually in a dry environment.

  • Avoid friction between pieces.

  • Clean gently using only a soft cloth.

Natural Wear & Customer Responsibility

Due to the characteristics of semi-fine jewelry and plated finishes, natural wear over time is expected.

The lifespan of each piece may vary depending on:

  • care routine,

  • frequency of use,

  • environmental exposure,

  • body chemistry,

  • and storage conditions.

For this reason, the following are considered normal wear and are not classified as manufacturing defects:

  • tarnishing,

  • oxidation,

  • fading,

  • discoloration,

  • scratches,

  • plating wear,

  • or corrosion caused by improper care or environmental exposure.

We encourage all customers to review product descriptions carefully before purchasing to fully understand the materials and characteristics of each piece.
